Call forwarding guide

How to send missed Grasshopper calls to another number

Grasshopper doesn't have a separate missed-call switch. Instead, it rings your forwarding numbers in the order you choose, so you put your own phone first and the number that should catch missed calls after it.

Add the forwarding number

  1. Sign in to Grasshopper on the web and open Extensions.
  2. Click Edit next to the extension your customers reach.
  3. Click Add a forwarding number and enter the number.
  4. Under How should Grasshopper handle calls to this number?, pick how the call connects (see below).
  5. Under When do you want this number to receive calls?, pick the schedule, then click Add this number.

Grasshopper says True Solo plans allow 1 forwarding number per extension and other plans up to 15. With only one forwarding number, this setup isn't possible on True Solo.

Set the ring order

Under the forwarding numbers, click Options and choose how they ring: In order, just once, Indefinitely, until someone picks up, or Simultaneously. For missed calls, choose In order, just once with your own phone first and the second number last, then click Save.

Why the connect option matters

Grasshopper's help center explains what happens when a forwarding number doesn't pick up:

  • Announced when you pick up: the call moves to the next number in the queue, or Grasshopper takes a voicemail.
  • Connects as soon as you pick up: the caller goes to that phone's own voicemail.
  • Name asked, then announced: the call goes to Grasshopper voicemail.

So if your mobile phone is set to connect as soon as you pick up, your mobile's voicemail may answer before the call ever moves on. Grasshopper also notes that announced calls may ask the person answering to press 1 to accept, and that a short ring time may not leave room for the announcement; it suggests 25 to 40 seconds. An automated answering service usually can't press 1, so test the full path with the steps below.

Good to know

  • Grasshopper says call forwarding is included at no additional cost.
  • If an extension has no forwarding numbers, or they're all switched off, calls go straight to voicemail.
  • Grasshopper notes that its desktop app rings for 20 to 30 seconds when you're signed in, regardless of forwarding rules.

Test it before you rely on it

  1. Call your business number from another phone.
  2. Don't answer. Let it ring.
  3. Check that the call reaches the number you forwarded to.
  4. Call once more while you're on another call, if you set up busy forwarding too.

If the call goes to your old voicemail instead, the forwarding didn't save. Go through the steps again, or contact your provider.
