Call forwarding guide

How to forward calls on an iPhone

The iPhone has a Call Forwarding switch, but it forwards every call. If you want your phone to ring first and only send the calls you miss, you'll use your carrier's codes instead. Here's both.

Forward all calls with the iPhone setting

  1. Open Settings, tap Apps, then Phone. On older iOS versions, Phone is directly in Settings.
  2. Tap Call Forwarding and turn it on.
  3. Tap Forward To and enter the number.

Apple notes this setting is for GSM networks, so you may not see it on every carrier. While it's on, your iPhone won't ring for incoming calls.

Forward only the calls you miss

The iPhone setting has no "only when unanswered" option. Use your carrier's code from the iPhone's keypad instead:

Test it before you rely on it

  1. Call your business number from another phone.
  2. Don't answer. Let it ring.
  3. Check that the call reaches the number you forwarded to after a few rings.
  4. Call once more while your phone is switched off or in airplane mode, if you set up forwarding for unreachable calls too.

If the call goes to your old voicemail instead, the forwarding didn't save. Dial the code again slowly, or contact your carrier.
